| Taoism is indigenous to China and represents the mystical or spiritual side of the Chinese mind, as opposed to the more practical and legalistic philosophy of Confucianism. There are many resemblances between Taoism and Indian mystical traditions such as Mahayana Buddhism and Advaita. There were undoubtedly mutual influences, though much of this similarity simply arises from a similar state of consciousness attained through peaceful and introverted meditation. The writings and art of Taoism display great charm, which is characteristic of Chinese culture in general. |
